A whole-of-society and community-led initiative to drive, accelerate, and scale up grassroots efforts to eliminate Female Genital Mutilation in Nigeria.
The Federal Government of Nigeria through the Ministries of Women Affairs and Health is leading the initiation of and support to the Movement is a whole-society and community-led undertaking to drive, accelerate and scale up grassroots initiatives and efforts that have been helpful in eliminating FGM in five (5) states in Ebonyi, Ekiti, Imo, Osun and Oyo.
The Movement's initial target is five (5) million (adolescent girls and boys, women - especially women at risk of FGM, pregnant and lactating mothers, men, grand-parents, traditional birth attendants, traditional excisors, community health workers (CHEWS), health workers, civil society organizations, faith-based groups, traditional and community leaders, development partners, youth groups, women-led groups, the media, government and justice sector actors) working towards eliminating the practice and mobilise local action using the pledge #Act2EndFGM.
We pursue a comprehensive approach to ending FGM through partnerships, capacity building, and policy advocacy.
Build and maintain strong partnerships with local communities, traditional leaders, and influencers to achieve gender equality and protect girls' rights.
Empower girls and women through safe platforms to lead change and advocate for the abandonment of FGM in their communities.
Expand community understanding of FGM's harmful effects and the legal protections available through education and dialogue.
Improve access to health, psychosocial, and justice services for at-risk populations and survivors.
Facilitate community declarations of FGM abandonment aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Work with government at all levels to develop, implement, and enforce FGM laws and policies.
