What is Female Genital Mutilation?

FGM comprises all procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia for non-medical reasons. It has no health benefits and causes severe harm.

Health Consequences

FGM has no health benefits. It causes severe bleeding, infections, childbirth complications, and long-term physical and psychological trauma.

Human Rights Violation

FGM is a violation of the human rights of girls and women. It reflects deep-rooted inequality between the sexes.

Legal Protection

FGM is illegal in Nigeria under the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015, with penalties including imprisonment.
